Broome International Airport first in WA to achieve Carbon Neutrality under Global Accreditation Program

Broome International Airport (BIA) has achieved Level 3+ under the internationally recognised Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, becoming the first regional airport in Western Australia to reach carbon neutrality for its direct operational emissions.

This milestone positions BIA as a sustainability leader not only among regional airports, but across the Western Australian aviation sector. Level 3+ accreditation places the airport within a select group of airports globally — and an even smaller cohort of regional airports — to demonstrate independently verified carbon neutrality alongside active engagement with airlines and precinct partners.

Level 3+ accreditation confirms that BIA has:

• Accurately measured and independently verified its carbon emissions
• Implemented measurable emissions reduction initiatives
• Achieved carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 operational emissions
• Actively engaged airlines, tenants and service providers to address emissions across the airport precinct

Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally endorsed global carbon management certification program for airports. Advancement to Level 3+ reflects not aspirational commitments, but verified performance and transparent reporting against international standards.

A key contributor to this achievement was the installation of on-site solar generation in 2023, significantly reducing grid electricity consumption and lowering the airport’s overall carbon footprint. The project demonstrates how regional infrastructure can deliver practical, locally driven climate action at scale.

“As a regional airport serving a globally recognised tourism destination, we recognise that sustainability is increasingly central to our competitiveness and long-term resilience,” said Andrew Lane, CEO.

“In 2021 BIA set a goal to become carbon neutral by 2026. Achieving that milestone ahead of schedule reinforces our commitment to responsible growth and strengthens our position within the Western Australian aviation market. The introduction of solar in 2023 was transformative, and achieving Level 3+ accreditation shows that regional airports can lead — not follow — in delivering credible climate action.”

Stefano Baronci, Director General of Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East, said:

“We congratulate Broome International Airport for achieving Level 3+ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation. By positioning itself as one of the leaders in efficient carbon management, Broome International Airport demonstrates a strong commitment to building a more sustainable future. This aligns with our industry’s collective vision of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.”

BIA plays a critical role in supporting tourism, health access, business connectivity and freight across the Kimberley and broader region. Achieving Level 3+ strengthens the airport’s value proposition to international and domestic airlines, tourism operators, investors and government stakeholders by demonstrating that environmental responsibility and operational reliability can be delivered in tandem.

As sustainability expectations continue to rise across the aviation and tourism sectors, BIA’s accreditation provides a clear point of differentiation within Western Australia — reinforcing the airport’s readiness to support partners seeking lower-carbon operations and transparent environmental performance.

The airport will continue building on this work by identifying further emissions reduction opportunities, improving energy efficiency and collaborating with airport users to support broader decarbonisation outcomes over time.
